Cheap Pocket PC19th Mar 2003 @ 11:55
Current Mood: Acquisitive
Amazon.co.uk appear to have some slight pricing problems with iPaq Pocket PCs at the moment:

Get an H1910 for £7.32 (normally around £300 or more)

Get an H5450 for £23.04 (normally around £450 or more)

Doubtless this error will soon be corrected, and we'll have to wait and see whether Amazon actually honour the orders, but about half my company have confirmation emails already ;-)

Update I: The site seems very sluggish at the moment...
Update II: Looks like they've finally got wise and shut up shop completely.
Update III: Stories at BBC News, The Register and Slashdot. Doesn't seem very likely that the orders will be honoured. For a humorous take, look here.
Update IV: Have had an email though from Amazon saying that they're cancelling the order. No great surprise, really.

Damn. They just closed their store. :( Just as I was half way through buy8ing one for myself too. :(

Damn it. They closed amazon.co.uk. Sales rank for the more expensive one was 23, though. Wonder why...

The cheaper model was already at Sales Rank No.1 when I first heard about it.
Most of the folk here went for the top-end model (Mmmm... Bluetooth, fingerprint reader ...)

Don't suppose anybody bought spares that they could let me have for a nice cheap price did they? :) Not that they are likely to honour it but you gotta ask to be ont he safe side. :)

Didn't think of it at the time - although even if they do honour orders (and according to The Register they won a test case in the US, although UK law may be different), I very much doubt they'd do so for more than 1 per customer.

BBCi have this to say on the subject. Particularly interesting:

...customer services have told at least one customer that the price would be honoured.

Wow. Go you!

Well, I ordered one of the high-end ones. Whether I actually get it remains to be seen - there's certainly much debate on the subject at the moment but no official statement.

Bah. Sounds unlikely that they'll honor the orders at those prices. I suppose I can't really blame them, but I guess one also can't help but hope that the little guy gets one over on the corporate giants every now and again.

Not that I was implying that you are in any way little, honey.

I don't really expect them to honour it, but I'd be really annoyed if I hadn't ordered one and they do honour them ;-)

Amazon
They're not under any obligation until they have either dispatched the product or emailed the customer to say that the product has been dispatched. Until then, either side can pull out of the agreement.
They can cancel the order, but they are not legally allowed to demand more money from customers who have ordered already.

It doesn't look like they'll honour the agreement, but to be honest, I don't blame them.
Mistakes are too easily made, which is why both retailer and consumer have plenty of opportunity to pull out if they need to.

Re: Amazon
matriculation
*nods* IANAL, but that sounds about right - the debate was over whether the initial confirmation constitutes a contract, but given that trying to buy at that (obviously incorrect) could be easily argued to be in bad faith, which would void the contract anyway.

The only possibility is that they might honour orders for the good PR it would give them, but that could well prove to be very expensives, so I reckon that's pretty unlikely.

They haven't yet cancelled my order or otherwise contacted me yet, but I'm not really holding out any hope.

Well, at least I think you beat the other three sites you list to the punch :-) I'd have had a go if I'd been at home and refreshed at the right time.
