The Italian Job one of the classic British movies - the "Us vs Them" euro-sceptic mentality, one of the all time greatest car chases, great music such as "The Self Preservation Society" and what is surely the definitive cliffhanger ending. Great performances from the cast, particularly Michael Caine and Noel Coward, plus plenty of lesser names including Benny Hill. Add in classic lines such as "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" and you get some top class entertainment.
Apparently, they're now doing an Americanised remake - with the action moved to Los Angeles, I'm not quite sure what the Italian connection is - I guess we'll just have to wait and see (with us Europeans doing 4 months more waiting than the Americans. typical.)
That said, the remake of Ocean's Eleven is a cracking movie (and scores higher on IMDB than the original). It's surely a considerable re-working given the high-tech nature of the heist. Good acting from the Brat Pack (replacing the Rat Pack of the original), and the shenanigans of the plot are a joy to behold.
A couple of funnies: What's up with "And Introducing Julia Roberts as ..." and where did all those fliers in the van come from..?
