Random media ramblings...

  1. SomethingAwful has a bunch of B-Movie-style poster spoofs which are well worth a look.Page 8 has the HP one, most of the rest are pretty good too.
  2. Apparently, Lost has been cancelled - in 2010 (well, assuming it doesn't happen soon, say, if the ratings keep falling). Three more 16-episode seasons - a hard limit which (together with the fact that last week's episode was actually pretty decent) gives me hope that they might be able to pull of a decent conclusion. Maybe.
  3. Heroes was awesome - must be Tuesday.
  4. April Ryan is my new video-game-girlfriend (not sure who the previous one was, actually - possibly Elaine Marley, although she's kinda taken now - but it certainly wasn't Lara Croft...). I picked up a copy of The Longest Journey at the weekend for under ten bucks from Steam, and it's all kinds of fantastic. Yes, the graphics are eight years old, but it's a point-and-click adventure, so who cares. It's got interesting characters, a huge sprawling plot, buckets of humour, and got the Monkey Island reference in very early on - what more could you ask for? Oh, yes, a fix for the lock-up bug (save early, save often...)

Me too :-( I cried for, like, the entire second half.

Actually, I haven't Spidey yet - I was to busy bike-hunting on Saturday and Sunday, and by Monday I really couldn't face going into town again, so I'll go and see it this weekend.

That's a shame, as without my geek card such activities as downloading torrents and burning CDs are certainly way beyond me.

Yah, totally!

By the power of geek card, I was able to download stuff and burn a CD remotely. Alas, I couldn't then get the CD to jump out of the Mac, into a jewel case and an envelope and then post itself. Darn. But hey, that's what bikes are for!
Hang on… that would be Wil Wheaton the original irritating geek boy from Star Trek: The Next Generation who flunked out of the Academy to go travelling? That one? I can't believe there is anyone over 25 who hasn't heard of him.

(Aside: ST:TNG is coming up to its 20th birthday? I feel old…)

Oh all right then.
I LOVED The Longest Journey... I wonder if they've ever come out with the sequel? You might also like Syberia and Syberia II if you like TLJ... I fully admit that it's the stories and characterizations in both that really got me. You know the graphics and stuff aren't really my baliwick.

They did indeed come out with a sequel. The reviews are apparently rather more ... mixed than for the original, but I shall have to see for myself. In due course - I'm only up to chapter 5 "There And Back Again" (now where have I seen that before...) of TLJ...

I remember you mentioning Syberia before - I'll be sure to check it out if TLJ has indeed started me on an adventure game kick.
TLJ is probably the best game ever. Well, maybe.

I played it again last year, I found a couple of fixes on the interweb - have a look around.

Also, I tend to find that if you like TLJ you'll like Beyond Good and Evil
It's definitely up there with the likes of Monkey Island - 'tis rather harder to compare, say, an adventure to an RTS to an FPS to an RPG...

I picked it up via Steam (Valve's online content delivery thingummybob), so I'm not sure whether patches for the CD/DVD versions work. Still, regular saving got me to the end without too much annoyance.
