Invariants Xmas party tonight - usual quiz fun, I did particlularly well on the Bond Themes round, came second overall (out of 3 - 1 team knew a disturbing amount about Steps' song titles). Also got to play some No Limits Texas Hold 'Em. Unfortunately, I didn't have the best of cards - the best being a pair of sixes that were easily beaten, a hand I folded on the flop which would have been a straight (arrg!) and finally the K/Q of clubs - on which hand everyone else folded, so they never got to see my Ace-high straight. In the end, five player, only 7 hands, so not much of a game. I did end up slightly ahead on small slips of paper, though...

Very typical set of experiences at THE, FWIW. I've been playing poker by e-mail in a poker-by-e-mail tournament and it hasn't been very exciting. Folded all but two of my hands very quickly indeed. Kept one because it made an up-and-down straight draw after the flop and called someone's moderately large bet because the pot odds looked reasonable, but it didn't improve on fourth street so I couldn't justify betting again. Bet AK (off-suit) before the flop and called someone's re-raise. Flop missed, but I bet it large anyway and induced the fold. "Bluffing with the best hand" as Barney put it.
