Like almost everyone, I receive a lot of spam every day, much of it offering to help me get out of debt or get rich quick. It's ridiculous. One of the comments on the BBC News article "If not smacking, then what?":
Parents now have the ultimate sanction: "No Harry Potter". Or worse, you could threaten to tell them that [censored] dies on page [censored].In other ...er... "news", I've done further LJ style tweakage, in the form of graphical threading on entry pages. Unfortunately, to see it, you'll all have to post lots of comments. Muahahahaha!

And better than '*censored* dies on page *censored*' parents should just rip the pages concerned out, It's not only a punishment it's also conductive to better behaviour in the future as the pages are held to ransom.
ie, 'Behave yourself today and I'll let you have another three words from the top of page xyz'

I'd have to agree that withholding the book would be a much more effective punishment than spoilers - and as an inducement for good behavior rather than getting one disemboweled with a rusty spork.
