I hate computers and they hate me

So, on Friday night I decided to reinstall Windows on zorac, on the grounds of it having developed a tendency to lock up of late. That seemed to go smoothly enough and even the post-install defrag manage to complete successfully. Naturally, when I went to flash the BIOS next morning (in case that was implicated in the issues) it all went horribly pear-shaped and I was left a machine the did nothing at all. Doh. Eventually I remembered that I had problems with the BIOS vis-a-vis my RAM, and borrowed some from the office on the way into town. Fitting that allowed me to change the settings in the BIOS and soon all was well. Having done all that, you can imagine my delight to discover that XP is still subject to random lock-ups. *stabs*

Last night, the gale-force winds managed to give me a nice little power-outage. Initially, all seemed well, until later in the evening visar (and thus my Internet connection) died. A post-mortem this morning revealed a dead power-supply as the culprit, and given that it was the one thing not on a surge protector... This afternoon I popped into PC World to pick up a new case and another surge protector - the chances of finding a spare PSU that would go into visar's dinky case being about nil. Naturally, the only cases they had were great big hulking things, but at least I managed to get a cheap one. Plan A involved fitting out the new case with components from visar's previous incarnation, but that was doomed to eventual failure by a now-dead USB controller. Eventually I ended up fitting the mini ITX board from the dinky case into the new monster case and I had something that worked, in a Frankenstein's monster kind of way.

All that really got in the way of me getting anything much else done (other than shopping trips), so my evil plans to take over the_restricted appear to have been thwarted yet again. Wah.
