Valentine's

February the 14th is so much nicer when someone special to spend the day with.

In aid of this on Friday the 13th, I braved the airways and caught AA91 to Chicago. The journey was rather productive - I got docs for RS and some fic written, read the first two Artemis Fowl books and re-watched Intolerable Cruelty. We arrived pretty much on time, but the baggage to forever to arrive so I was only waiting a few minutes for hermorrine to pick me up, armed with a red rose (eee! Nobody ever gave me flowers before!). She has lots of details of the weekend, but I'll add a few bits to that.

Pressies: The first gift hermorrine gave me was a cute ickle bear holding a heart that says "You stole my heart!" - proof that great minds think alike (or that t00bs seldom differ - you decide)! The second one was an über-geeky set of coasters made from PCBs (circuit boards) - something I need and very cool to boot. The third one was a lovely pair of silver keyrings which together form a heart with our names (no, not LJ names) on it - one for each of us. The last pressie was a Map of the Internet - very useful if Google gives me bad directions...

TV: It was certainly interesting to see Saturday Night Live - and if that was an unfunny episode, I'd love to see a good one. One sketch had Anna Nicole Smith (Drew Barrymore) appearing on Larry King Live. and being a total drugged-out airhead. Naturally this led to watching a bit of the Anna Nicole show which happened to be on another channel. Scary. I would have to say that Drew's portrayal was unjustifiably flattering... Anastacia was fun, but really rather weird in places, and certainly not as polished as a Disney cartoon, for example.

Food: The less said of 'plane food, the better - although the obligatory pizza before arrival at the windy city was good. Saturday night's dinner, however, was excellent (the starters took rather a long time to arrive, but were then brought by the manager - and on the house). I started with a whole portobello mushroom - finely sliced, but still in one piece - very nice, after this I had a casserole featuring most of a chicken and huge amounts of sausage, sweet pepper and other veggies. I was too full to contemplate a rather good but heavy-sounding pudding, so opted for a lighter cream with red fruits. Sunday lunch was burger time - because you just can't seem to get really good ones on this side of the Atlantic, and these were allegedly the best in Chicagoland (not something I can dispute).

Sunday night came far too soon, and it was time to head to the airport, laden with pressies, mountain dew and peanut butter cups (including a big giant one saying 'Sweetheart' on it) to catch AA98 back to London. A bulkhead/aisle seat allowed me to stretch out and if not actually sleep, at least doze with iPodal accompaniment. We made good time, landing half an hour early, and to compound the shock, by bag beat me to the luggage carousel - I nearly died of shock.

I really must write-up New Year's soon. Am bad boyfriend...

I've been reading too many poker blogs - that screamed "good Omaha high hand, but where's the low?" at me. :-/
