The End of an Era...

Today is something of a sad day for me - my parents are finally moving out of the house where I grew up and on to pastures greener (the south of France). It's strange to find the place I thought of as "home" for more than twenty years (yes, even after I had my own mortgage) now belongs to someone else. On the bright side, now that Mum & Dad are en France full time, perhaps the swimming pool will finally get dug...

Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam

The "disclaimer" line from a piece of spam I just recieved:
You are receiving this email because either you or someone else have subscribed you to a bulk mailing list.
Entirely uninformative, but at least honest - it wasn't claiming not to be spam (probably why it got through the filter). Plus it gave me a laugh.

Who da man?

Interesting new experience this morning - before I could get into the office, I had to pick the lock. To explain, the internal slot didn't line up eith the keyhole, so there was no way to get the key into the lock (which begs the question how did someone get their key out of the lock in the first place). Needless to say, virtually every screwdriver, metal coathanger etc. in the company was on the far side of the lock. Eventually, with the aid of a paperclip etc, I managed to juggle the lock round far enought to get a key in and insert the door.

Greetings from Telehouse

So, here I am, sat in a large, excessively air-conditioned room full of racks, occasionally poking things between calls with the office, and I'm thinking to myself "what to do to pass the time?" I could read my book (Finity by John Barnes - started off in your standard Nazis-won-WWII alternate universe, but now seems to be developing some interesting many-worlds stuff), but that gets annoying with constant interruptions. So, by the power of Greyskull Lynx, here I am.

Nothing more to say, of course...

Thoughts on "Empire"

I have to confess that watching Star Wars a few weeks back in this post-prequel era was something of a disappointment. The Empire Strikes Back on the other hand, is a much superior effort. Whilst it can can't match Attack of the Clones for the sheer wow factor of the visuals, it more than makes up for that in scripting and direction - perhaps it's no co-incidence that this is the episode in which George Lucas took something of a back seat - providing only the story.

Copy Protection Challenge

This evening I purchased something for online download from a website. To view it, you need a special app which allows you to view it as often as you like, but does some funky DRM stuff to stop you from printing it more times than you've paid for (in my case, once). Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to think of three ways of defeating this before you go into the <lj-cut> below...

Another lazy day...

Was too apathetic to get up, so stayed in bed until around one. Then I had to do mundane stuff like shop for food and do obscene amounts of Laundry. Oh, what fun. Added a few new pics to my LiveJournal and noticed that a couple more people have friended me (waves). After that, I got down to doing some more writing - had to forcibly restrain one of my characaters from referring to himself as a t00b (whatever that means), so have clearly been reading too much LJ. Watched WarGames while I ate tea - another surprisingly good movie which I haven't watched for years. More CD ripping and writing and writing after that - noticed that have just passed 15,000 words, so about 1/5 done. Unfortunately, expect to run out of plot ideas in about 5-10,000 words time. Darn. Wrote LiveJournal entry. Went to bed. (OK, that last part is still in the future).

Keyboard hacking

Once upon a time, many moons ago, I came into possession of an exciting Multimedia Keyboard on the grounds that it was cheap. I never used the multimedia stuff because it was, frankly, pants. This evening I decided to play around with it again...
