Spent a little while refining my LJ styles - not much visible difference (except for the colour change), but it's a lot neater under the hood - no referencing of external style sheets, no hard coded colours, name etc. This allows the easy changing of the colour scheme from the "Modify Journal" page, although it's going to look funny on a non-white background (unless it's very pale) as the beveling would get messed up - the transparency allows me to work around one colour change, but not two. The header and footer are, of course, hard coded, but other than that it should be a fully portable style. Yay me!
OK, for the first time since spring, the 15 minute walk to work actually did its job of waking me up. In the balmy days of summer it doesn't really work, but when the cold is piercing your fleece within a minute of stepping out of the front door, you very rapidly find yourself more awake. Question is, does this mean I can get away with setting my alarm clock a bit later?
OK, my second thought after having this idea was "I bet somebody's done this already", so feel free to point out prior art. It was already inspired by much poking around on LiveJournal, thegraybook's hilarious Very Secret Diaries (which I finally got around to reading the other day) and jiggery_pokery's suggestions re: the release of my own fic-in-progress.
Thish sheemsh like an ecshellent time to dishcussh the effectsh of alcohol. I wash asshured upon leaving the party I shpent the evening at that I "looked pisshed", sho I think I know what I'm talking about (if not, thish posht will do a rapid disshappearing act in the morning). Ash I shaid to my shishter (why is my family alwaysh involved in any ecsheshive alcohol conshumption?), I shushpect that after the firsht glassh, alcohol hash very little effect on me beyond the shoporific. That firsht glassh, however, doesh create an intereshting "veil" betwicsht mind and body - whilsht I can shtill think fairly normally, theresh a notishable delay in communicayshunsh with the resht of me (depending on shircumshtanshesh - bubbly on an empty shtomach worksh fasht, wine with a meal ish shlow).
Here endeth the firsht drunken esshay, Time for bed...
In the first in an occasional series of reviews, I'll be looking at tonight's episode in my day-by-day rewatching of Buffy & Angel.
"Hush" is widely regarded as one of the best upisodes of Buffy. Joss Whedon pulls all the stops out to deliver an episode with a nifty gimmick (over 60% of the episode is without any dialog), truly spooky villans, action, romance and great heaps of plot & character development. ( Collapse )
A couple of people pointed me at this neat illusion, a classic example of the eyes seeing what they expect to see (and yes, the two greys are genuinely the same - cut and paste if you don't believe it).
"Surround sound is going to be increasingly important in future offices" - yeah, right. That's going to work really well when every desk in an open-plan layout has it's own set of 5.1 speakers. Plus they're suggesting that we'll all be using emailed audio and video for intra-office communications - have they never heard of the telephone (or even Voice Over IP), heaven forbid anyone actually walk across the room and actually talk to someone. This one's been rolling around for a few days, but the link on SlashDot to Richard Stallman's latest infomercial for GNU/Linux prompted me to throw together my thoughts on the subject, plus a bonus section on Free Software vs. Open Source. ( Collapse )Read the full SlashDot rant-fest here</a.
Hah. My late night is justified after all. Had I actually gone to bed at a sensible hour, I probably wouldn't have experienced the excitment of a monitor-jiggling earthquake. Probably only around 3 on the Richter Scale, but far more fun than anything you get from one of those earthquake simulators (e.g. the one at the Natural History Museum). It certainly had an entertaining effect on my Galileo thermometer.
